How we test gear.

We buy everything. We test it on real trips. We tell you what we actually think.

Last updated April 2026

The short version

We buy every product we review with our own money. We don't accept free samples from manufacturers. We don't have sponsored content. We don't have advertising. When you click a link on ActiveGearDen and buy something, we earn a small commission — that's how the site stays funded. That commission never influences which products we recommend or how we rank them.

How we source products

Every product reviewed on ActiveGearDen was purchased at full retail price through the same channels our readers use — Amazon, outdoor retailers, brand websites. We don't have media accounts, press credentials, or manufacturer relationships that give us access to free gear.

This matters because review sites that accept free products from brands have a structural conflict of interest. It doesn't mean every review they write is dishonest — but it creates pressure to be generous. We remove that pressure entirely by paying our own way.

What "tested" actually means

We test gear by using it. That sounds obvious, but a surprising amount of gear content online is written from spec sheets, press releases, and manufacturer marketing.

Our process:

For footwear: We log real miles — typically 50–200 miles per shoe across varied terrain and conditions before writing. We assess fit, cushioning, durability, outsole grip on wet and dry surfaces, and how the shoe performs after extended use rather than just out of the box.

For apparel:We wear it. Rain jackets get tested in actual rain — not just held under a faucet. Base layers go on multi-day trips where laundering isn't an option. We assess how claims hold up after washing, extended wear, and real-world conditions.

For camp and paddle gear: We take it out. Tents get pitched in wind and rain. Stoves get used at altitude and in cold conditions. Kayaks get paddled on real water. Camp chairs get sat in for hours at a time.

For fitness equipment: We use it for real workouts over weeks and months — not one test session. We assess durability, ergonomics, and how well the product holds up with consistent use.

For knives, sunglasses, and similar gear: We carry and use them in daily conditions. We assess real-world performance — not just lab specifications.

Testing period

We don't publish reviews after a single use. Minimum testing periods:

  • Footwear: 6–12 weeks of regular use
  • Apparel: 2–3 seasons of use or a full season in target conditions
  • Camp and outdoor gear: 3–5 field trips minimum
  • Fitness equipment: 8–12 weeks of consistent use
  • EDC and daily carry: 60+ days of carry

How we rank products

Within each review, we rank products by how well they solve the problem for the stated use case. The Editor's Pick is the product we'd buy with our own money if we needed exactly one. Budget picks are the products that genuinely over-deliver for their price. Premium picks earn their cost premium in ways we can demonstrate.

Rankings are not influenced by:

  • Affiliate commission rates (they're essentially the same across Amazon products)
  • Brand advertising relationships (we don't have any)
  • Free product receipt (we don't accept any)
  • Brand outreach or PR contact (we're not responsive to it)

When we update reviews

We update reviews when: a new model releases that changes our recommendation, we've discovered long-term durability issues that weren't apparent initially, or significant price changes alter the value proposition.

Update dates are shown at the top of every review page.

What we don't test

We don't test everything. Our current coverage is 27 categories across outdoor, fitness, travel, and camping gear. We publish new review categories when we have enough first-hand experience with the products to write something useful — not on a content calendar.

If a product isn't on ActiveGearDen, it's because we haven't tested it yet, not because we have a reason to exclude it.
